Women Drivers

INTRODUCTION

There is a remarkable amount of nonsense talked about women drivers. The simple fact is that while women may have proportionately more crashes than men, those crashes are, on the whole, much less severe, and women are therefore responsible for far fewer injuries and deaths than male drivers. As a reflection of this fact, many auto insurance companies in the U.K. are now offering significant discounts for women drivers; perhaps it’s time for American companies to follow suit. Sexist guys, eat your hearts out!

Organized Cars Help Drivers Keep Their Eyes on the Road  (September 2004)

Of U.S. women who own or lease a car:

* 89 percent of women say being well organized in their car helps them keep their eyes on the road;

* 30 percent of women, ages 18-34, say they have either had or almost had an accident because they were reaching for or looking for something in their car;

* 62 percent of women say their car is like another living space for them;

* 76 percent of women agree that they crave organization, especially when “on the go;”

* 48 percent of women, and 60 percent of women ages 18-34, say it is a constant battle to keep their cars organized;

* 57 percent of women have gotten creative by adding one or more containers to their cars to help them keep organized;

* 27 percent of women describe themselves as very organized, and 52 percent say they are somewhat organized;

* 56 percent of women stated they wish they had more storage space in their cars for small items;

* 30 percent of women would like more storage space for oversized items, such as clothes, children’s toys, and equipment.

A light-hearted look at why men shouldn’t get angry with women drivers may be found on the Internet:

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver cut right in front of a pickup truck, causing him to drive onto the shoulder to avoid hitting her. This angered the driver enough to make him hang his arm out his window and ‘flip the woman off.’
“Man, that guy is stupid,” I thought to myself.
I **always** smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic, and here’s why: I drive 48 miles each way every day to work. That’s 96 miles each day, and of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.
Most of the bumper-to-bumper are on an eight-lane highway. There are seven cars every 40 feet for 32 miles. That works out to be 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.
Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper, I will pass at least another 4000 cars. So that brings the number of cars I pass daily to something like 36,000.
Statistically, females drive half of these. That’s 18,000 women drivers! In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS. That’s 642. Cosmopolitan says 70% of women describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding. That’s 449. According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide. That’s 98. And 34% describe men as their biggest problem. That’s 33.
According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons, which is increasing.
That means that every day, I drive past at least one female with a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.
Flip one off? ….. I think not!
