Overview:  From 1970 until 2002 the fatality rate dropped from 30.4 to 8.8 deaths per 100,000 population. This reduction has been achieved in spite of a huge increase in motor vehicle use. From 1970 to 2002, the fatality rate per 10,000 registered vehicles has dropped from 8.0 to 1.4. In terms of 100 million vehicle-kilometres travelled the fatality rate has dropped from 4.4 in 1970 to 1.0 in 2000. [Source: ATSB]

Serious Injury Due to Road Crashes in Australia, June 2004

According to a report released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, about 22,000 people are seriously injured in road crashes in Australia each year.  In addition to providing data on the number of serious injuries, the report also includes information on the types of injuries sustained. (Note this report excludes fatalities.)
