The efforts made by Chandigarh Traffic Police in the field of road safety have been recognised internationally, and their webmaster, Harman Singh Sidhu was awarded an IRTE / Prince Michael International Road Safety Award at a ceremony held in  New Delhi on 6th January 2006.

At Drive and Stay Alive, we have had the long-term pleasure of communicating and working closely with Harman whose dedication to reducing crashes and casualties we admire greatly.

The saddening catalyst to his selfless actions was a crash in which he lost the ability to walk, and the photograph, left, was taken when he revisited the scene of his own personal tragedy, several years after the event.

The Institute of Road Traffic Education [IRTE] works alongside the Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Awards each year, with the former making its award presentations in India and the latter doing likewise in London.

In the photograph, right, Harman is seen receiving his well-deserved IRTE award; by coincidence ten years after his crippling misfortune.

"Disabled as I am, I think I still have a lot to give to others," says Harman.

"My experience and a burning desire to do something for the others rather than being labelled a dependant drove me towards road safety education. Since I used to do a lot of research in this field, I thought a little activism added to my information might help reduce the number of injuries and deaths in road accidents."

Harman's own website is Arrive Safe, which is described as "an India based NGO working on developing road safety programs to increase knowledge, awareness and skills amongst the Indian road users."

The image, left, leads to the excellent website that he has developed for the Chandigarh Traffic Police.

Well done, Harman. You have our delighted congratulations.
