The Canada-based TIRF has been awarded a contract by the Department for Transport (DfT) in the United Kingdom to develop a demonstration alcohol ignition interlock program in the regions of Birmingham and Bristol. TIRF has partnered with Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp. of Toronto, Canada and Reliance Monitoring Services in the United Kingdom to deliver the interlock program. RSN Associates LLP will assist TIRF with the research project in the U.K.

The 30-month pilot project will also involve examining the practicalities and social aspects

of interlock programs through an investigation of the acceptability of the interlock device to the user and the impact on the lifestyle of the user and other household members as a result of having an ignition interlock device installed in the family vehicle.

The project will have interlocks installed in the vehicles of 100 repeat drink drive offenders for a period of 12 months. Interviews will be conducted with interlock participants and a group of 100 other repeat offenders periodically throughout the 12-month interval. A follow-up interview will be conducted with all participants 6 months later.

If the pilot project is successful, new legislation could be enacted allowing the courts in the United Kingdom to use alcohol ignition interlocks as part of its drink drive rehabilitation programs.
