Adrian Walsh, director of the awards scheme the said:, "How delighted The Prince was to be able to visit TRL in person, to present this award. TRL's work in road safety in developing countries has brought about a sea-change in how such countries are able to address the problem and in the actions of the agencies that support them. There is still an enormous task ahead, but TRL with its ongoing research, development work and advisory programmes will continue to help reduce the unacceptably high casualty rate."

TRL has been at the forefront of road safety research in developing countries and as a result, road safety is now recognised as one of the major issues facing these areas. This recognition is now focussing on action and support to tackle the toll of over one million deaths per annum world-wide. Besides exposing the problem and providing a comprehensive understanding of its nature, TRL has been able to develop programmes and best practice in the areas of education, operations and engineering, to help prevent unnecessary loss of life and the associated financial hardship.

Dr Susan Sharland, Chief Executive TRL said: "I am delighted to be accepting this award on behalf of the international team who have worked, in some cases for much of their professional life, in helping to reduce the number of road accidents and casualties in developing countries."
