The New Zealand Road Safety Innovation Awards recognise innovation in road safety, and encourage individuals and organisations in the road transport industry, business sector and community, to pursue innovative practices to improve road safety.

 

The winners of the inaugural Road Safety Innovation Awards were announced at a ceremony hosted by Transport Minister Paul Swain in Parliament on February 24. The category winners and recipient of the premier award are:

 

Road Safety Community Promoter Award

Shattered dreams, a drink-driving education programme highlighting the devastating impact of an alcohol-related crash on the life of a promising young athlete developed by Community Injury Prevention Unit (CIP).

 

School Road Safety Award

Sharing our roads, a learning partnership for rural schools and truck drivers developed by North Loburn School.

 

School Road Safety Award

A new parking and turning area for cars and buses developed by Te Puru School as a way to separate its children from traffic around the school.

 

Corporate Road Safety Award

Milk Supply Road Safety Initiative developed by Fonterra involving a comprehensive programme aimed at improving the safety of the company's large fleet of milk tankers.

 

Vehicle-Based Innovation Award

Static Roll Threshold (SRT) calculator developed by Transport Engineering Research New Zealand (TERNZ) to measure the stability of heavy vehicles and reduce their likelihood of rolling over.

 

Road-Based Innovation Award

Speed Control System; a speed control system designed to implement temporary 40km/h speed limits in Christchurch school zones. Joint recipients were Christchurch City Council and High Technology Systems.

 

Premier Award

The overall winner, from the above categories, was the Milk Supply Road Safety Initiative.
