A well known fact about road crashes is cited in a British local authority website, http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/roadsafety/safety_education.php  where they state that: "Well over 90% of all crashes are caused by human error. In the long term the best method of reducing the number of crashes is through better road users, rather than better roads or vehicles."

There have been many studies on the causes of highway accidents. Treat (1977, et al.) performed a 5 year study that examined the causes of 2258 automobile accidents. Human error was the sole factor in 57% and a contributing factor in 92.6%. Read this version.
