The Chauffeur (UK) Launch Issue -- January 2004 Reviewed by Eddie Wren
"Welcome to issue one of The Chauffeur Magazine," writes editor Paul Gibson. "We aim to tackle important topics which affect the country's drivers, and highlight the chauffeurs' passion for the most important tool of the trade -- the car!"
Thus starts this new oracle and even a glance through the formative copy confirms Gibson's promise: compulsory additional driving tests for "private hire" drivers, an interview with the president of the British Chauffeurs' Guild, the choice of the Volvo S80 for a fleet of around 200 chauffeur-driven cars for Virgin Atlantic airline's "Upper Class" passengers, stretch limousines, the new Maybach, the latest Jaguar XJ-series, LPG fuel incentives, how to buy a second-hand S-class Mercedes, and so on. Even though this is, as yet, a fairly slim magazine there was certainly enough readable and enjoyable content to more than justify the cover price of £2.95.
Add to the main articles a good selection of quarter-page "fillers" and a well-balanced raft of advertisements, and the magazine comes with a good design image, too.
Chauffeurs -- as individuals and as a profession -- certainly seem to be held in greater respect, and in some cases even prestige, in Britain than they are here in the USA. No doubt some of this state of affairs is traditional and maybe symptomatic of the perceived British class system, but on the other hand The Chauffeur Magazine reflects pride and professionalism that may also contribute to this situation.
Good luck to Messrs Gibson & Co. We certainly recommend The Chauffeur Magazine to anyone in -- or interested in -- the profession.
